The Confidence Crisis in Public Speaking

Confidence is a critical factor to success. It gives you the power to speak confidently and powerfully in front of your audience. Public speaking, however, is a skill that can be extremely daunting for many people, and it’s not always easy to build up your confidence levels.

7 Ways to Build Confidence in Public Speaking

Practice Your Materials. Practicing for a big presentation is the best way to ensure that you’ll be able to get your thoughts across during the event. You want to practice speaking loudly enough and smoothly enough so that people in the back of the room can hear you clearly while also feeling engaged. It’s equally important to make sure you’re not too loud and shrill because this will make it hard for some people to listen and may cause anxiety or anger.

Engage the audience with eye contact and body language. Eye contact and body language are the keys to engaging the audience. When you smile at someone, they smile back. When you shake their hand, they shake your hand back. And when you look them in the eye, they look back at you. People tend to follow what other people do, so if we don’t engage with the audience, they won’t engage with us, which means we will lose their attention, which means we will lose control of the room.

Manage your nerves. Speech anxiety, also known as Glossophobia, can feel like a significant obstacle for some people. It’s understandable to have some nerves before giving a speech, but they don’t need to dominate your thoughts.

Know your strengths and weaknesses. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses would help you prepare for any situation that may happen when you go on stage. Public speaking anxiety is a common issue for many people, but learning what your audience expects from you is a great way to help reduce the adverse effects of this feeling. Whether it is being confident in what you have to say or know how much time has left before your turn, understanding what your audience expects will help with the anxiety caused by public speaking.

Don’t be afraid to pause. The idea of pauses is an integral part of any speech, and it’s essential to let the audience know that you’re not just talking but listening to them. However, sometimes it can be difficult for speakers to pause in time and then resume without losing momentum. Some people think pausing signifies weakness; others fear pausing implies they are unprepared when they aren’t. At many points in their lives, listeners need to take a break from what is spoken about to hear what is said.

Dress to Impress. Dress according to the event. Sometimes, you dress differently to draw attention but always start with dressing up to impress. Dressing well not only shows professionalism but also makes you feel good. When you feel good, you feel confident.

Network. To some, ‘network’ sounds like a tall order to fulfill. In general, networking is like mingling, get-to-know sessions. Before and after the speech, spend some time getting to know the audience. If before the speech is when you need to prepare yourself, then meet the audience after the speech. Getting to know your audience builds your network and trains you in building your confidence. Over time, you will see that you approach and speak to people better.

How to Methodically Increase Your Confidence Over Time

Confidence is something that can be built over time. We all know that it takes time to build confidence, and there are no shortcuts to achieving the desired result.

Now that you have discovered the different ways of building confidence, the next question is, how do we build it over time, so it is sustainable? The first step is preparation, which includes preparing for the presentation by completing practice tests, making sure you have the suitable materials, practicing your public speaking skills, and preparing for any challenges in front of you. The second step is preparation for your next presentation through meditation and breathing exercises before presenting your ideas or sharing your knowledge with others. Finally, preparation for future presentations entails keeping a list of the things that went well in previous presentations and building on them to improve your skillset further!

The Keys of Engaging an Audience and Captivating their Attention

The key to engaging an audience is to provide them with a relevant narrative. With this in mind, self-care speeches’ speech etiquette will be different from that of other speeches.

Speakers need to tell a story when they speak about their own experiences, and the story should be personal and relatable so that it can connect with the audience and elicit empathy and care in them.

Self-care speeches range from sharing our struggles with mental health to speaking about how we’ve overcome challenges in our lives and what we believe we’ve learned from them. The key is telling a story that connects with the audience and makes them feel like they are listening to someone who has been through something similar or understands their struggles or life goals.

Conclusion:

Confidence is your ability to feel self-assured while confidently making decisions, facing challenges, and achieving goals. It helps us navigate our biggest obstacles and strengthens our relationships with others by helping us communicate with others. With the different ways of building confidence presented to you, I am confident you will build confidence.

Do You Have a Speech and You Have No Idea What To Talk About?

If you are about to give a speech, but you have no idea what to talk about, or how to structure your presentation, I have some good news for you. We’ll discover some speech ideas in today’s post.

You are not the only one who is struggling with this problem. We all do it from time to time. The question is how do we find the topics that interest us and will be enough material for a successful speech?

There are several ways that you can find speech ideas that will help you in your struggle. One way is by asking others what they think may be an interesting topic on which they would like to hear more on. Another way is by using free online resources such as TED Talks and YouTube videos of speeches given at various conferences around the world.

Tips for Picking The Best Speech Topic

As the host of the show, you want to create a speech that will be memorable to your audience. There are many different factors that go into picking out a great topic.

Here are some tips for picking the best speech ideas:

Research your audience

The best speech topics are both interesting to the speaker and intriguing to the audience. The best way to determine what will be a good topic is by researching your audience. This includes finding out their age, interests, and occupation.

Know your peers

Picking a speech topic is more than just brainstorming and choosing what you want to talk about. There are many factors that go into the process such as the audience, timing, and type of event. These tips for picking a speech topic will help you choose the best one. Knowing your peers looks into other speakers who are in the same line as you are. Gain inspiration from their speeches.

Focus on an emotion like humor or nostalgia

Public speaking is a daunting prospect for many people. The prospect of standing in front of an audience, addressing them and getting your point across can be nerve-wracking. You need a topic that will get your audience’s attention and keep them entertained. These are areas that focuses on emotions because emotion is a powerful tool.

Use keywords in your title and tagline

When writing your post, it is important to be conscious of keywords. Speakers can use these keywords in their titles and taglines to ensure that their speech content has the best chance of grabbing the audience’s attention and are relevant to their purpose of listening to you.

Know what type of language to use in your speech

It is important to know the type of language to use in your speech depending on who you are speaking to. Would you speak the same way to a group of children as you would a group of business executives? In general, the more educated and interested your audience, the more formal your language should be.

Where To Find Speech Ideas In 4 Quick And Easy Steps

Now that we’ve covered the tips to finding speech ideas, next we’ll see where to find the topic ideas. It’s hard to come up with ideas for speeches when you’re in a pinch. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of three quick and easy steps that will help you find your next speech.

Review your interests: Think about what topics really interest you and what do you know about them. Chances are, there’s at least one that would be a great subject for a talk!

Brainstorm: What topics fit well with your interests? Can there be any overlap between different areas of knowledge? If so, this can help to expand on the idea and create more depth in the speech while also giving you more material to choose from.

Look for inspiration: The best way to come up with fresh topics is by looking outside of your current field of interest. Look online, at magazines, or read books about subjects you have no experience in. Brainstorming with colleagues can also be a great way to get new ideas.

Events: One of the exciting thing I get when visiting speaking events is the speeches itself. Sometimes, when I’m listening to the speaker, I get inspired with new ideas for my own topics. Sitting in one speech can generate a number of ideas. Be sure to bring your pen and paper, or nowadays, a stylus pen and tablet.

Start Planning Your Next One Today!

It’s easy to get lost in all the aspects of planning your next speech, especially finding speech ideas. But don’t stress! With these handy speech ideas tips, you can’t go wrong.

Public Speaking Mistakes: Public speaking is a skill that people have to master in order to succeed in their careers or education institutes. But public speaking can be challenging and often it can go wrong. So here are seven common mistakes that many people make when they're presenting and what you can do to avoid them.

Last week we explored the first 8 common public speaking mistakes. Today, we’ll continue with another 8 more.

Public Speaking Mistake #9 Reading from the Slides

Reading from your slides is fine, but if you rely on them too much, you’re going to lose the audience’s attention very quickly. Instead, speak confidently and use your slides as a brief overview of what you want to say about each slide.

Public Speaking Mistake #10 Giving a Bad Speech Title

A bad speech title can have a negative impact on the speaker and the audience. A good title can be a source of encouragement and inspiration. Apart from that, a speech title that is not related to your speech is a no-no. If you are talking about ‘Greenhouse Effects’ but your speech title is ‘Bitcoin’, then you’re going to either confuse or put-off the audience.

Public Speaking Mistake #11 Focusing Too Much on the Audience

This is more of analysis paralysis whereby you want to focus on every audience so much that you cramp every possible points in your speech so that every single audience benefit from the speech. Although the intent is great, but it will affect your delivery and, not forgetting, time.

Public Speaking Mistake #12 Relying on Notes Too Much

Some may say, get rid of notes, it makes you look unprepared. Some may say, you need notes, it makes you look prepared. In my opinion, notes are great to have when you need a quick look at the key points before putting the notes aside and delivering your speech. Avoid reading from your notes word by word.

Public Speaking Mistake #13 Not Utilizing Feedback from Previous Talks

Ken Blanchard often use this phrase by Rick Tate, a previous consulting partner with Ken,

“Feedback is the breakfast of champions”

You may have received feedback, whether it was from your first speech, rehearsal or even after a number of speeches. Take the feedback constructively and use points that will help you in your next speech. When you don’t utilize the feedback, you won’t grow in your speaking skill.

Public Speaking Mistake #14 Failing to Captivate

People often read from a script or memorize their speech and this can be boring for others who are listening.

In order to maintain a natural flow of speech, it is important for the speaker to put their thoughts into words as they are speaking. This can be difficult to do when reading from a script or memorizing their speech. However, the speaker can still maintain a natural flow of speech by using gestures and facial expressions in order to keep their audience engaged.

Public Speaking Mistake #15 Informal or Formal?

Wear and act according to the event setting. This is more to the example of, if the event you are speaking to is a formal business event, you may not want to dress up informally or too informal. The tone should be formal and there should be little to no sensitive jokes or stories. This is because it can make some audience members to hear your feel differently or the message makes them feel like they’re not important and that they’re not worth taking the time to address them. This goes the same for informal events.

Public Speaking Mistake #16 Not Paying Attention to Detail

Public speaking is one of the most challenging tasks to do. Standing in front of a group of people can be intimidating and stressful, so it’s easy to make mistakes. Not paying attention to detail can happen to many things such as spelling error or data mismatch on materials. It can make the speaker look unprofessional and unprepared, especially if the mistakes are repeated.

Conclusion

It’s important to take your time when you are preparing for a speech. Practice makes perfect! Use this mistake list as a guide for things to avoid before giving your presentation or writing your script, because it’s much easier that way than saying “I’m sorry I made a mistake” in front of that crowd!

Public speaking is a skill that people have to master in order to succeed in their careers or education institutes. But public speaking can be challenging and often it can go wrong. So here are 8 common public speaking mistakes that many people make when they're presenting and what you can do to avoid them.

Introduction

Public speaking is a skill that people have to master in order to succeed in their careers or education institutes. But public speaking can be challenging and often it can go wrong. So here are 8 common public speaking mistakes that many people make when they’re presenting and what you can do to avoid them.

Public Speaking Mistake #1: Not Preparing Enough Material

A presentation is something that you should prepare for very thoroughly, especially if it’s your first. It is not possible to be prepared for every possible scenario, but one thing is certain – you should prepare enough material.

One of the most important things to always have with you is a presentation outline template. A template will make sure that you don’t forget any part of your presentation and will help you organize the content in a logical order.

Public Speaking Mistake #2: Not Reading a Speech Aloud Before Giving It Live

Some people give presentations without reading them aloud to themselves first. This is very dangerous because there are many errors that can be caught before the presentation starts.

It saves time and effort if you read it aloud to yourself before giving it live. That way you can hear what you have written, aloud.

Public Speaking Mistake #3: Not Getting Enough Sleep, Rest or Eating Well Before Your Speech

Getting enough sleep and eating well before a speech is very important.

Sleep plays a huge role in our health and well-being. The need for sleep varies from person to person, but in general it’s recommended to get 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Sleep deprivation can lead to various health issues such as weight gain, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Eating right before speaking can also play a big part in how you deliver your speech. If you’re not giving your body the fuel it needs ahead of time then you will have less energy for the task at hand. Make sure to eat something about an hour or so before you speak so you have plenty of time for your food to digest and give yourself a boost!

Public Speaking Mistake #4: Focusing on Yourself Instead of Your Audience

Many people think that public speaking is about getting your audience to like you. But, this is not true. Public speaking is about getting your message to the audience or a call to action for the audience to achieve something as a result of what you say – whether it be inspire, buy, donate, or vote for something.

Public Speaking Mistake #5 Not Knowing Your Audience

Knowing who your audience is will help you devise ways to better create content for them. It’s important to know the demographics, psychographics, and affinities of your audience because that will help you plan how to best communicate with them.

Knowing your audience will also help you come up with a strategy for creating content that resonates with their needs and interests.

Public Speaking Mistake #6 Announcing Your Topic Too Early or Too Late in the Speech

When it comes to the structure of a speech, there are two schools of thought. The first is that you should introduce your topic as early as possible in your speech for maximum impact. However, the second school of thought is that you should not introduce your topic until the end of your speech so that it can have maximum impact.

Some people believe that there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to when to reveal or introduce your topic in a speech. In my opinion, the right way is you should use whichever one feels most natural or suitable for you depending on what kind of message you want to deliver with your speech.

Public Speaking Mistake #7 Forcing Yourself to Be Funny Even If You Aren’t Or Trying To Be Interesting All The Time

You have to be yourself when speaking in public, that is the only way you will be successful.

We should not try to act like someone we are not just because we think it will make us more interesting. Instead, we should focus on being ourselves and show our personality.

Public Speaking Mistake #8 Going Off-Script or Making Up Something On Spot that You Have No Idea What You’re Talking About

Sometimes we tend to go off script, especially when we’re asked challenging questions. Even though we may not know the answer or the full answer to the question, we want our speech to be perfect and thus, try to answer the question the best we can. Then, a follow up question comes. *cue dramatic music*.

When faced with this dilemma, it is important to remember that your audience is not expecting perfection but instead looking for authenticity and relatability in their speakers. If you have no idea or expertise in the area, acknowledge it and provide an option for the audience. This usually comes in a redirect to an expert of the topic, such as “I’m not an expert in this area but…you can check out this expert <name>”. You should also keep in mind that your public speaking skills will be sharpened when practicing improvisation.

For example, Julian Treasure gave a talk on “How to speak so that people want to listen“.
Now that you have gotten some idea about speech and want to start with your first speech, let’s discover some speech tips to get you started.

Speech Preparation Tips

Here are some speech tips to help you prepare:

Basic sequence. Our first speech preparation tips is to start with the basic sequence of a speech. When it comes to giving a speech, there are many things to consider. If you want to make an impression, you’ll need to create a speech that is organized logically and doesn’t jump around. The best way to do this is by organizing your thoughts into an outline before diving into the content. Generally, there are 3 parts to a speech: opening, points, closing.

Practice, Practice, Practice. The second speech tip is an evergreen one. The best way to prepare for a speech is to rehearse it. No matter how often you have given the same speech, it is always wise to rehearse it at least once before delivering the speech. There are a few benefits of rehearsing your speech. Studies have shown that taking a break between tasks (in this case rehearsing your speech) can help increase productivity and creativity. For one, if you have not done a speech in awhile, it will help you remember key points and get in the right mindset. Apart from breaks, get your friends together to listen to your speech. It can be like you are presenting in front of an audience.

Comfort is key, but there are many occasions when you will need to be dressed professionally, whether on a live occasion or a virtual one. When deciding what to wear for the presentation, it is important to, first, identify if there is a dress code. This can sometimes be a requirement from the organizers, such as beach theme, black and white theme or even casual. Even with the theme or requirements, it’s best to match the theme with something you will be comfortable in.

Familiarize yourself with the venue. It can be the stage, the seating arrangements, room size and other setup of the venue that will help you or distract you during your speech. When you’re doing a virtual speech, you will need to familiarize yourself with the app or equipment such as the controls: mute button, video buttons, switching between apps or menus on your laptop.

Visual aids are a great way to help the audience, as the name suggests, visualize what is being said. Visual aids can come is a variety of items such as charts, graphs, pictures, props and slides. They can also be used to reinforce your points in an interesting and compelling way. These should be use to aid your speech and not be the main focus of your speech.

The most effective presenters are those who engage with their audience and construct a narrative around their topic. This comes to life when the presenter have made necessary preparation to the speech. I hope these speech preparation tips will help you in your next speech.

If you find these speech tips useful for you and someone who could benefit from it, do share this post with them.
