Do You Have a Speech and You Have No Idea What To Talk About?

If you are about to give a speech, but you have no idea what to talk about, or how to structure your presentation, I have some good news for you. We’ll discover some speech ideas in today’s post.

You are not the only one who is struggling with this problem. We all do it from time to time. The question is how do we find the topics that interest us and will be enough material for a successful speech?

Another way is by using free online resources such as TED Talks and YouTube videos of speeches given at various conferences around the world.

Tips for Picking The Best Speech Topic

As the host of the show, you want to create a speech that will be memorable to your audience. There are many different factors that go into picking out a great topic.

Here are some tips for picking the best speech ideas:

Research your audience

The best speech topics are both interesting to the speaker and intriguing to the audience. The best way to determine what will be a good topic is by researching your audience. This includes finding out their age, interests, and occupation.

Know your peers

Picking a speech topic is more than just brainstorming and choosing what you want to talk about. There are many factors that go into the process such as the audience, timing, and type of event. These tips for picking a speech topic will help you choose the best one. Knowing your peers looks into other speakers who are in the same line as you are. Gain inspiration from their speeches.

Focus on an emotion like humor or nostalgia

Public speaking is a daunting prospect for many people. The prospect of standing in front of an audience, addressing them and getting your point across can be nerve-wracking. You need a topic that will get your audience’s attention and keep them entertained. These are areas that focuses on emotions because emotion is a powerful tool.

Use keywords in your title and tagline

When writing your post, it is important to be conscious of keywords. Speakers can use these keywords in their titles and taglines to ensure that their speech content has the best chance of grabbing the audience’s attention and are relevant to their purpose of listening to you.

Know what type of language to use in your speech

It is important to know the type of language to use in your speech depending on who you are speaking to. Would you speak the same way to a group of children as you would a group of business executives? In general, the more educated and interested your audience, the more formal your language should be.

Now that we’ve covered the tips to finding speech ideas, next we’ll see where to find the topic ideas. It’s hard to come up with ideas for speeches when you’re in a pinch. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of three quick and easy steps that will help you find your next speech.

Review your interests: Think about what topics really interest you and what do you know about them. Chances are, there’s at least one that would be a great subject for a talk!

Brainstorm: What topics fit well with your interests? Can there be any overlap between different areas of knowledge? If so, this can help to expand on the idea and create more depth in the speech while also giving you more material to choose from.

Look for inspiration: The best way to come up with fresh topics is by looking outside of your current field of interest. Look online, at magazines, or read books about subjects you have no experience in. Brainstorming with colleagues can also be a great way to get new ideas.

Events: One of the exciting thing I get when visiting speaking events is the speeches itself. Sometimes, when I’m listening to the speaker, I get inspired with new ideas for my own topics. Sitting in one speech can generate a number of ideas.
What is a Speech?

You are probably wondering what a speech is. A speech is an oral presentation in front of an audience, usually given by one person, who talks about a topic for an allotted amount of time. The main goal of a speech is to communicate your thoughts and ideas to the audience.

Public speaking has been around for centuries, but it has become more popular thanks to the internet. Public speaking is a vital skill that can be taught and learned. In fact, public speaking can be a very rewarding experience.

For example, Julian Treasure gave a talk on “How to speak so that people want to listen“. He shared tips on speaking. You can watch on TED. Recently more and more people are turning to TED Talks as their inspiration for what they talk about in their speeches. Apart from that, it’s a great platform when you need to get some speech tips.

Now that you have gotten some idea about speech and want to start with your first speech, let’s discover some speech tips to get you started.

Speech Preparation Tips

Here are some speech tips to help you prepare:

Basic sequence. Our first speech preparation tips is to start with the basic sequence of a speech. When it comes to giving a speech, there are many things to consider. If you want to make an impression, you’ll need to create a speech that is organized logically and doesn’t jump around. The best way to do this is by organizing your thoughts into an outline before diving into the content. Generally, there are 3 parts to a speech: opening, points, closing.

Practice, Practice, Practice. The second speech tip is an evergreen one. The best way to prepare for a speech is to rehearse it. No matter how often you have given the same speech, it is always wise to rehearse it at least once before delivering the speech. There are a few benefits of rehearsing your speech. Studies have shown that taking a break between tasks (in this case rehearsing your speech) can help increase productivity and creativity. For one, if you have not done a speech in awhile, it will help you remember key points and get in the right mindset. Apart from breaks, get your friends together to listen to your speech. It can be like you are presenting in front of an audience.

Comfort is key, but there are many occasions when you will need to be dressed professionally, whether on a live occasion or a virtual one. When deciding what to wear for the presentation, it is important to, first, identify if there is a dress code. This can sometimes be a requirement from the organizers, such as beach theme, black and white theme or even casual. Even with the theme or requirements, it’s best to match the theme with something you will be comfortable in.

Familiarize yourself with the venue. It can be the stage, the seating arrangements, room size and other setup of the venue that will help you or distract you during your speech. When you’re doing a virtual speech, you will need to familiarize yourself with the app or equipment such as the controls: mute button, video buttons, switching between apps or menus on your laptop.

Visual aids are a great way to help the audience, as the name suggests, visualize what is being said. Visual aids can come is a variety of items such as charts, graphs, pictures, props and slides. They can also be used to reinforce your points in an interesting and compelling way. These should be use to aid your speech and not be the main focus of your speech.

The most effective presenters are those who engage with their audience and construct a narrative around their topic. This comes to life when the presenter have made necessary preparation to the speech. I hope these speech preparation tips will help you in your next speech.

If you find these speech tips useful for you and someone who could benefit from it, do share this post with them.
